چکیده

We calibrate the photographic photometry of the revised New Luyten TwoTenths catalog (rNLTT) by matching 3448 rNLTT stars to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The correction is linear in magnitude and goes from zero at V ∼ 14 to 0.32 mag at V = 19, in the sense that rNLTT was previously too bright. The correction implies that the underlying USNO-A2.0 photometry, on which rNLTT photometry is based, is non-linear. The new calibration somewhat improves the appearance of the (V, V − J) reduced proper motion diagram in the sense of better separation between disk and halo stars. We repeat Gould’s analysis of 5000 halo stars in rNLTT. The most important change is to move the peak of the halo luminosity function about 0.5 mag dimmer, from MV = 10.5 to MV = 11, putting it into good agreement with the parallax-based determination of Dahn et al. Stellar Halo Parameters from 4588 Subdwarfs

Using a reduced proper motion discriminator, I obtain a sample of 4588 subdwarfs from the Revised NLTT Catalog of Salim & Gould. The ample statistics and low contamination permit much more precise determinations of halo parameters than has previously been possible. The stellar halo is not moving with respect to the Local Standard of Rest (LSR) in either the vertical or radial direction, up to u...

The distance to the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 ⋆

The distance to NGC 5128, the central galaxy of the Centaurus group and the nearest giant elliptical to us, has been determined using two independent distance indicators: the Mira period-luminosity (PL) relation and the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch (RGB). The data were taken at two different locations in the halo of NGC 5128 with the ISAAC near-IR array on ESO VLT. From more th...

A Determination of the Luminosity Function of DA White Dwarfs from the Kiso Survey

We rederive the luminosity function for the sample of DA white dwarfs from the Kiso Schmidt ultraviolet excess survey (KUV stars) using the spectroscopic method where the atmospheric parameters (Teff and log g) and absolute visual magnitudes for each star are obtained from detailed model atmosphere fits to optical spectroscopic data. We compare the result of our determination with that obtained...

Stars evolving off the asymptotic giant branch and passing through spectral types F and A are excellent candidates for a new extragalactic standard candle. These post-AGB (PAGB) stars are the visually brightest members of Population II systems. They should have a narrow luminosity function, bounded from above by the shorter transition times of more massive and more luminous remnants, and from b...

Is Galactic Dark Matter White ?

We calculate the expected white dwarf luminosity functions and discovery functions in photometric passbands, if these stellar remnants provide a substantial fraction of the sought Galactic dark matter, as suggested on various observational grounds. We demonstrate the extremely rapid variation of the photometic signature of halo white dwarfs with time and thus the powerful diagnostic of white dw...
